Breast reconstruction can be performed using your own body tissue (autologous reconstruction), breast implants (implant reconstruction), or a combination of both. The most appropriate approach depends on your anatomy, previous treatments and reconstructive goals.

Autologous breast reconstruction uses tissue from another part of your body, such as the abdomen or thigh, to recreate the breast.

It may be suitable for patients who:

• Prefer reconstruction using their own body tissue
• Wish to avoid breast implants
• Have had or are expected to undergo radiotherapy
• Are prepared for a longer procedure and recovery

Implant-based breast reconstruction rebuilds the breast using a silicone breast implant without the need to transfer tissue from another part of the body.

It may be suitable for patients who:

• Prefer a shorter surgical procedure
• Want to avoid tissue transfer from another part of the body
• Have sufficient healthy skin and soft tissue to support an implant
• Prefer a less extensive procedure with a shorter recovery
